Lighthouse Crafts - Make A Lighthouse

Fun Lighthouse Crafts For Kids And Adults

Lighthouses are fascinating and beautiful buildings, they do such an important job guiding ships away from dangerous rocks, and because of their remote locations, are often shrouded in an air of solitude and mystery.

If you have a light house fascination, you might like to make some of the fun lighthouse crafts, and decor projects. I have hand-picked links to the best lighthouse themed crafts on the internet, plus some of my own craft ideas and projects too.

Make Lighthouse Decorations Out Of Old Soda Cans

I will be adding some pictures and a template for making cute 2d lighthouses out of old soda cans You can do many things with these lighthouses when they are made, use them as decorations, wall art, brooches, card decorations...

Preparing Your Soda Tin

First you need to prepare some soda cans for use; Wash them out and dry them as much as you can. Make a small hole near the top with a pair of scissors, then insert and cut the top of the tin off.

Next cut down one side of the tin, and when you get to the bottom, cut found the bottom of the tin, like you did with the top. When you have cut the bottom off, cut the piece of tin in half. (unless you want to make a larger design) Be careful of the rough edges, they can cut, also be careful not to get any of the can trimmings on the floor, they are painful when stepped on

Making A Soda Tin Lighthouse

Print off the template below or draw out your own, onto a piece of coke can, take care to draw carefully as the can will be very springy and bendy.

Cut out all of the parts of the template

Paint each part of the template, with acrylic paint in the colors of your choice. Get really creative, stick things on if you wish, or decoupage your lighthouse parts.

If you decide to use acrylic paint, you need to use the paint without any water, and dab it on, you will need to use 3-4 coats to get a nice even covering. Make sure to dab paint around the edges too as it makes them not sharp any more.

When your masterpiece is dry, it is time to stick it all together, use hot glue, super glue, or any other good strong glue, to stick the parts of the model together.

If you want to hang your soda can lighthouse then punch a hole in it with a hole punch and thread onto some ribbon.

Lighthouse Crafts For Kids

Kids especially love light houses, and can have hours of fun making these simple crafts for kids. My favourites are the lamp projects, when finished the child can take their lamp to bed with them and use it as a comforting night-light.

How To Make A Plastic Bottle Lighthouse

A safe and easy tutorial, that kids can easily do: Turn an old plastic bottle into a lamp, and decorate it.

Things To Do With Lighthouse Pictures

You could use the pictures to make cards, posters, decorations, calenders. They could be cut-out and used in a range of decoupage projects too. I am very into decoupaging and I will start a project soon which feature these beautiful buildings. I will be posting the step by step on this page.

If you would like to try some decoupaging in the meantime, it is very simple. All you need is some PVA, scissors, and some lighthouse pictures.

Decide where you are going to stick your pictures, you could decoupage a piece of furniture, a box, a picture frame....You might want to paint the item first with some acrylic paints.

Cut out the pictures and coat the backs with glue, then simply stick where you desire. If you get air bubbles, try to smooth them out carefully with a dry brush, or try peeling and re-sticking.

On large items you might have to peel and re-stick a few times, I was decoupaging a large table to and found that the paper kept bubbling until I had peeled and re-stuck it 5 times.

When it is dry paint over the item with more PVA, you might want to varnish it too for a nice strong coating.
