Make Your Own Amazon Rainforest Umbrella Mural

A complete free project for children - just think of all the peace and quiet as they color and glue...
This project has all the plants, tree, and animal templates that a child would need to make a fantastic rainforest mural. The various parts of the mural can be printed out, and require coloring before they are cut-out and stuck to form the mural.

This is fun because your child can design their own rainforest scene, the colored pieces could also be pasted onto furniture or walls to make a rainforest themed bedroom.

The Amazon rainforest can be found in six South American countries and holds a massive 70% of all discovered plants and animals. It rainforest is also said to produce up to 20% of our oxygen too!

Sounds Of The Amazon Rainforest - What does the rainforest sound like? Watch this cool video and listen to the sounds of nature!

These sounds of the Amazon rainforest videos are used for relaxing to, and the help some people drift off and sleep (I say some people because although they are wildly popular, I can't sleep unless it is dead quiet.)

Regardless, this is a lovely way to show kids some of the magic of the rainforest. I went through a lot of videos before I picked this one out, I chose this 'sounds of the rainforest' video becuase it has the coolest and most interesting rainforest noises.

I think it will be very magical for a child to hear all these noises and imagine they are there in the rainforest.

Awesome Deadly 60 In The Amazon - Kids TV show about the animals in the Amazon Rainforest and river

This is one of my favorite animal shows, it is on UK TV and the presenter is quite lovely :) In this series he is travelling the Amazonian rainforest in search of deadly wildlife. This is not just wildlife that is deadly to humans, but wildlife that is deadly to other animals and insects too.

Because of this unique angle you get to see a lot of unusual and interesting animals that you may not even know existed, let alone being deadly.

Steve Backshall the presenter is not scared of getting up close to the animals and you can sometimes see him and the crew dash away as he drops a deadly spider that he is holding, which scuttles here and there, causing mayhem.

Rainforest Customs - What Is The Bullet Ant Ceremony?
About the bullet ant ceremony in the Amazon

The bullet ant ceremony is a rite of passage to become a warrior amongst a certain tribe called the Satere-Mawe, who live in Brazil.

The bullet ants are known for their powerful venom, which is very painful and causes temporary paralysis at the bite spot. The bullet ant venom is described as being as painful as being shot and this is how it got it's name,

In this initiation (which is actually endured a further 20 times before the boy taking the initiation becomes a warrior)

The ants are tranquillized and hundreds of them are threaded into a mitt, when the ants wake up the boys place their hands in the mitts full of ants and have to endure the stinging for 10 painful minutes. Eeeek!

The Bullet Ant Ceremony

The bullet ant ceremony was one of the things that I learnt about as a child, I remember being really bemused by the fact that people had to do these things as a right of passage, and wondering what it would feel like to be stung by the ants. Well, nowdays learning is much more up-close.
